The assignment for Fun Monday is to salute and show our appreciation to our Veterans on Veterans Day. Photo requirement of something patriotic. Thanks for the assignment Life according to Jan and Jer.
I chose two pictures:
Veterans Day Celebration at Arlington National Cemetery 2006

I did a little digging regarding Veterans Day because I really wasn't sure what to write. What I found was quite interesting.
Many people, including myself, confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day is set aside to honor and thank ALL those who served honorably in the military - wartime or peacetime. In fact, it is mostly intended to thank the living Veterans for their service and to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring those who died during military service.
Veterans Day is always observed officially on November 11th. Why? Back in 1919, World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Then, after World War II, congress replaced the word Armistice to Veterans and in October 1954, President Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation.
Thanks for the assignment and thanks to all of the Veterans out there who have fought for our security and freedom.

Wonderful post....Armistice Day, I nearly forgot that title. Excellent reminder. Thank you.
Mine's posted...scroll down to the last of my Monday blog. See you there.
great pictures and thanks for the little history lesson!!
Good info, your right, people do confuse veterens day with Memorial day. Love the picture of Arlington cementary, something so peaceful about that place.
I too am getting educated today about the differences in Memorial, Veteran's and Armistice Days. The important thing however is that we do what all of us FMers are doing today--remember and share those stories of our veterans.
BTW, your blog template is really great--love those muted fall colors and your use of backgrounds.
Another great post in honour of those who serve their country so well.
Great post and history lesson.
Thanks for the photos and the added history though I've never confussed the two holidays.
It is good to hear such a fine tribute
I'm proud of you and your research on this topic. Many of the young people of today do not know what a 'Veteran' is. It is amazing that they don't know much about history and the 'BIG' War.(WWII).So sad.
We have or freedom(s) now THANX to those who fought for them. We must never forget that.
Thanks for giving us that information. Great post!
I"ve never confused the two, but then I have enough veterans in my family to set me straight! Great post!
